Day 1: Saturday – Sea Breezes, Stingrays & Sips

Morning:

Rise early, grab a hot coffee from a local favourite (Raglan Roast or Zephyr in Wainui), and make your way to Wainui Beach. Gisborne is the first city in the world to see the sun, and the golden hour here is something special, wide open skies, rolling waves, and a peacefulness that’s hard to beat. Wander the beach, breathe in the salty air, and ease into your Winter weekend in Gisborne.

Then cruise into town and check out the Gisborne Farmers Market. Held every Saturday morning from 9.30am, it’s full of local characters, live music, and stalls stacked with fresh produce, pastries, preserves, and more. Grab a bite, stock up on snacks, and soak up the friendly buzz.

Late Morning:

Next, make your way up the coast to Dive Tatapouri, where you can wade out on a guided reef tour and interact with wild stingrays. It’s a hands-on experience that’s both magical and respectful of the marine environment, perfect for curious souls who like their nature with a little splash. You'll be wearing cosy waders and can layer up, so minimal coolness!

Afternoon:

Back in town, swing by Sunshine Brewery for a chilled tasting paddle or pint of their locally batch brews. Sunshine Brewery is the oldest independent brewery in the country and the perfect spot to unwind after your ocean adventure.

Evening:

End the day with dinner at one of Gisborne’s go-to restaurants. Try Crawford Rd Kitchen for modern seasonal dishes and a great wine list, Tahu for stunning ocean views, or Neighbourhood Pizzeria for delicious pizza. Whatever your pick, it’s all about hearty flavours.

Day 2: Sunday – Steam, Sip & Cinema Feels

Morning:

Take a scenic drive south to Mōrere Hot Springs, tucked into lush rainforest about an hour from Gisborne. The mineral-rich waters are the definition of soothing, especially in winter. Soak under the trees, breathe in the bush air, and forget what your inbox looks like.

Afternoon:

Cruise back into town and head to Matawhero Winery. Their rustic cellar door offers cheese boards, wines by the glass, and a cosy cellar door filled with local art. Sip on a Chardonnay or Pinot Noir while looking out over the vines, blissfully slow and just the right kind of indulgent.

Evening:

Round out the day with a film at Dome Cinema. Equal parts quirky and charming, this boutique theatre serves local wines, half time pizza's, and comfort in the form of squishy beanbags and candlelit tables. Perfect for a wintery night out, but feels like a real treat!

Day 3:   Walk, Brunch & Wind Down

Morning:

Ease into your final day with a walk along Oneroa Walkway. It hugs the coastline of Waikanae Beach and is an easygoing way to stretch your legs, with ocean views, seabirds, and that peaceful morning hush Gisborne does so well.

Follow it up with a mid-morning brunch, check out TahuFlagship Eatery, or Zephyr for great coffee and a breakfast menu that lives up to the hype.

Late Morning:

Before you hit the road, stop in at the Tairāwhiti Museum. It’s small but mighty, full of local history, Māori taonga, and regularly changing exhibitions. It’s a thoughtful way to wrap up your time in Gisborne, and a reminder that this place is deeper than just good views and great wine.
